Pell Mell - Only A Star

PellMell.png picture by Broder_G

Pell Mell was/is a German band who formed in 1971. They were a symphonic rock band with slight hints of prog and psychedelia, but according to the few sources of information available on the internet they gradually moved more and more over in the pure symphonic keyboard/guitar lane of music (think Mike Oldfield). This album is quite an epic number though, it’s like a great space opera complete with screaming vocals, crazy organ grinding, dirty violins, wild percussion and melodies from other worlds. I admit that parts of it are sort of cheesy, but on the whole it’s an extremely enjoyable album.

Pell Mell released five albums, one of which, luckily, can be found on Spotify;

Marburg’ (1972, named after their home town)
‘From The New World’ (1973)
‘Rhapsody’ (1976)
‘Only A Star’ (1978)
‘Moldau’ (1981)

‘Only A Star’ has been acknowledged as one of the best symph-rock albums ever to come out of Germany. Here’s a little taste. Be sure to check out ‘Marburg’ on Spotify!

PS.: Pell Mell actually sort of have their own website, though sparse it’s still kind of a cool thing.
