Penrod

From Allmusic:

Had he recorded his best-known tune, “Junkie John,” a few months earlier, Tim Dawe (real name: Jerry Penrod) might have been a star. A catchy, psychedelic folk-rock tune, it had begun getting radio airplay when the FCC began to crack down on drug-oriented recordings. Stations stopped playing the single, while Dawe faded quickly into obscurity.
A tale of joy and celebration there, indeed…

This record deserves every bit of attention it gets. Folkish rock, slight psychedelia, beautiful ballads and goofy inbetweens makes for a real music trip. I think Tim Dawe sounds like a mix between Tim Buckley and Dr. Hook, clean, vibrant and warm. You won’t forget songs like ‘Nite Train Home’, ‘Sometimes Alone’, ‘No Exit (Cafe and Gallery)’, and last but not least, the (in)famous ‘Junkie John’. The record was released by Straight Records, a label founded by Frank Zappa.

You can get the CD from Amazon, and you can listen to it in all it’s glory on Spotify. Enjoy!
