u.f.o.

jim-sullivan-ufo

i admit that one of the main reasons i went for this album was the title - ‘u.f.o.’ - and of course the cover. after listening to it a couple of times over i realise what a brilliant album we have here.

the redtelephone66 blog informs me that jim sullivan’s ‘u.f.o.’ comes in two different mixes. the one featured on the blog is the monnie records’ mix, in which drums and percussions are clearly put forward, while the century city mix puts them in the background and brings the vocals and guitars up. i like the monnie sound very much, it’s clear and well presented, and i have no problem making out the various elements. sullivan has a warm and articulated voice, enhancing the melodies and bringing a wholeness to the sound.

the album has ten tracks, and they’re all kind of short - the longest being just over four minutes. some of them seem to fade out prematurely, as if the whole thing is just a taste of what you have in store on the real album. still i think it comes together well. short, simple songs please me just as much as long and intricate ones.

you can get the whole album on the redtelephone66 blog, or download individual tracks on waxidermy. i’d like to share the opening track from the album with you here, so go ahead and have a listen.

(by the way, jim sullivan is not to be confused with big jim sullivan).
